Suddenly, high pitched yelling broke my focus. Upon investigation, I found that it was my neighbour’s kid, Sonu screaming because his mother refused to let him start his day with video games.

Cheshta TaterCo-founder, Rightantra For obvious reasons, people find secrets “shady”. Although they are not always, a request to keep it hush could be an indicator of child grooming. As a child, this is beyond comprehension. If you know better, the groomer will tell you that you do not.

Cheshta TaterCo-Founder, Rightantra Maybe it is the area of study I am in or maybe it is my generation, that we talk about sex quite openly and plainly. Sex and sexuality are as old as mankind but I’m sure eyebrows will be raised for opening an article on a child rights platform with this subject. While most readers would choose to read further to see what I have to say, some people will only continue reading it in the hope of some “spicy” content. Some will read further so they can criticise. At the end of the day, sex sells.

Our teenage years are when we begin to receive that freedom in small amounts. We begin seeing the thrill life holds for us—college, living alone, travelling with friends, a successful career, parties, and everything else. While socializing and celebrating with new friends and people, you may be introduced to alcohol and other intoxicating substances like weed. Tanya GoelOutreach Manager, Rightantra Many children, especially adolescents spend large amounts of time with video gamers collectively spending 3 billion hours per week playing them, something which has increased manifold in the pandemic with people turning to video games to compensate for outdoor physical activities. Did you know that since 2016, over 340 million children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 were reported to be overweight or obese? Obesity in children is a complicated medical problem. Let’s learn more!
Tvisha VarmaContributing Author, Rightantra Adolescence and childhood are pivotal stages in the development of a child’s brain. However, these are also very vulnerable stages for children. In fact, nearly 1 in every 5 adolescent experiences damaging mental health issues.
Just as you can avert your child from catching a cold or breaking a bone, you can prevent them from having mental health issues. We are all familiar with the aspects we have to take into consideration to keep a child physically healthy; nourishing food, exercise and immunisations. However, the basics for a good mental health aren’t always as defined. The foremost action to be taken is to understand that a child’s mental health is an extremely important part of their overall well being, and must be provided equal weightage as any physical requirement. Khadija HetavkarContributing Author, Rightantra Anushka MehtaCo-Founder, Rightantra Vaccination is an important tool to keep children safe from diseases by improving their immune system. Immunity is generally of two kinds - innate, which includes natural protection since birth, such as the skin which prevents entry of germs in our bodies; and adaptive, which develops throughout our lives either when exposed to a disease or through vaccination. Therefore, it is indisputable that children are more susceptible to diseases since they only possess innate immunity which easily gets overwhelmed and is unable to prevent the onset of every disease in a child. It is only through vaccination that children can be protected from diseases, which often have far-reaching consequences of a permanent nature.
This article has been rather difficult to write. Why should I target the innocent kids who are trying to make their mark in the artistic space? Doesn’t the media do enough of that already? Let’s have a look at the top pop-music artists today: Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Billie Ellish, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, and Harry Styles, among others, have all started their careers in the music industry as child artists. Every detail about them growing up has made it to tabloids or social media––romantic relationships, drug abuse, raging reactions, law suits, and more. Most of them, at one point or another, have been antagonized by the paparazzi who follow them everywhere they go. They might be breaking records today but all of this has only happened after surviving a gushing wave of hate. On that note, here’s my unpopular opinion for the issue: Child Artists like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus were justified in their reactions and behaviour.
Khadija HetavkarContributing Author, Rightantra Raising a child can be an overwhelming and challenging experience for parents. Children are impulsive, defiant, self-indulging, and in need of proper guidance. To regulate a child’s behaviour, a variety of disciplinary strategies have been implemented by parents over the years. These disciplinary strategies include time-outs, a temporary withdrawal of privileges, positive reinforcement, verbal reprimands, and physical punishment.
