This article has been rather difficult to write. Why should I target the innocent kids who are trying to make their mark in the artistic space? Doesn’t the media do enough of that already? Let’s have a look at the top pop-music artists today: Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Billie Ellish, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, and Harry Styles, among others, have all started their careers in the music industry as child artists. Every detail about them growing up has made it to tabloids or social media––romantic relationships, drug abuse, raging reactions, law suits, and more. Most of them, at one point or another, have been antagonized by the paparazzi who follow them everywhere they go. They might be breaking records today but all of this has only happened after surviving a gushing wave of hate. On that note, here’s my unpopular opinion for the issue: Child Artists like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus were justified in their reactions and behaviour. While it’s not easy for anyone to be in the public eye, it is even more difficult for children to do so. The age at which people make mistakes and live their life trying to hide tiny secrets from their parents, a child artist it put on display for the whole world to criticize them, and more often than not, they have less to gain and more to lose. For starters, they don’t earn the money––their parents do. Several child artists have spoken out against their parents living off their hardwork without giving a share to child. Meanwhile, these children miss out on their childhood and are micromanaged by parents and managers who expect them to “behave like a star”. Such behaviour includes being at several events, most of which grant easy access to drugs and alcohol. Demi Lovato and Drew Barrymore have been vocal about their relying on substances from a very young age and how this ended up being a major reason for the downfall.
When these children finally get a sense of independence at adulthood, they try to make up for their lost childhood but are unable to set limits for themselves because they have always had someone dictate every move of theirs. Without limits and having recently acquired title to all their wealth, child artists tend to cross the line by not behaving like a celebrity is expected to. Considering that many children have grown up watching these child celebrities, even as adults, these artists are required to behave like role models for children. For instance, Taylor Swift had talked about the criticism she had faced for drinking wine as a 25 year-old and Miley Cyrus turned to rebellion to break out of the shackles of being a role model to children for her entire life. So, the next time you think of criticizing adults who started off as child artists, just think of what they have had to tolerate already and if they really deserve your hate.
