Anushka MehtaCo-Founder, Rightantra History of ‘Pop Culture’ treatment of paedophilia
In today's day and age pop culture largely influences the lives of most people, especially Gen Z. We’ve all tried our hand at emulating Rachel Green from F.R.I.E.N.D.S or laugh-groaned at a ‘that's what she said’ innuendo picked up from The Office. Iconic movies, songs, and lierature have always created an impact, whether positive or negative, on the behaviour and perception of teens and adults alike. The author shall bring to light the negative effect of the portrayal of paedophilia in pop culture, which is either grossly romanticised or completely brushed under the carpet under the garb of karma. This leads to drastic consequences in present reality. Ameesha TripathiEditor In-Chief, Rightantra Love is in the air!
With Valentine’s Day gaining more acceptance in the Indian society, it is necessary to address the impact the occasion has on teenagers. The concept of roses, teddy bears, and chocolates is innocently cute, but the day also presents a great opportunity for us to address some key aspects to the celebration of Valentine’s by teenagers. Cheshta TaterCo-Founder, Rightantra Fauji Brat is a commonly used term in India (Military Brat in the United States) for children whose parent(s) serve in the armed forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Border Road Organisation, and Military Engineering Services, among others). Growing up, most of us have seen at least one film or a series which revolves around such a Military Brat. Whether it is Farah Khan’s Mai Hoon Na or Aubrey from Pitch Perfect or my latest and cringiest discovery, Ek Duje Ke Vaaste 2. Most of these carry traces, if not are wholly based on, of false stereotypes about the children from the Defence background. To point some of them out, we got in touch with some real-life Fauji Kids.

The Information and Broadcasting (“I&B”) Ministry’s move to govern the Over-the-Top (“OTT”) Platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus Hotstar, etc. has met with criticism from the champions of freedom of expression. While speculations indicate that the proposed censorship might be a restriction on the creative freedom of filmmakers, Rightantra highlights the importance of the regulation of OTT Platforms and suggests solutions to strike a balance between creative freedom and well-being of the children. Yashasvi Suroliyaa Student at Government Law College, Mumbai and a Contributing Author at Rightantra What do hit television shows like Riverdale, Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina among others have in common? Apart from being highly cringe-y and repetitive, it is that they all have a shared goal to overtly sexualise their teenage protagonists.
Yashasvi SuroliyaContributing Author, Rightantra Ameesha TripathiEditor In-Chief, Rightantra A psychological study reported that by the age of two, most children are conscious of the relevance of their gender and by the time they are four, they develop a clear sense of what is expected of boys and girls and how they are supposed to behave. Astonishingly, by the time they are six years old children associate intelligence with being male and niceness with being female. This probably is because growing up, children are surrounded by gender stereotypes, right from when they exit the womb and the colour of the cloth they would be first draped in is determined on the basis of their gender.
According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (“OHCHR”), gender stereotyping is defined as “overgeneralization of characteristics, differences and attributes of a certain group based on their gender”. Basically, gender stereotyping creates beliefs and biases as to how men and women should present themselves. Most of these standards are highly normalised. For example, men are supposed to be strong and tough, while women are expected to be delicate and nurturing. This article has been rather difficult to write. Why should I target the innocent kids who are trying to make their mark in the artistic space? Doesn’t the media do enough of that already? Let’s have a look at the top pop-music artists today: Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Billie Ellish, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, and Harry Styles, among others, have all started their careers in the music industry as child artists. Every detail about them growing up has made it to tabloids or social media––romantic relationships, drug abuse, raging reactions, law suits, and more. Most of them, at one point or another, have been antagonized by the paparazzi who follow them everywhere they go. They might be breaking records today but all of this has only happened after surviving a gushing wave of hate. On that note, here’s my unpopular opinion for the issue: Child Artists like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus were justified in their reactions and behaviour.
BOOK REVIEW: ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE BY BENJAMIN ALIRE SÁENZ11/10/2020 Drasti JainDrasti Jain is a third year law student at Government Law College, Mumbai. I primarily decided to read this book because of its pretty cover (yes, I judged it by the cover) and because the characters involved the names Aristotle and Dante. While my expectations for the book were vastly different, nevertheless it did not disappoint but rather went over and above what I had envisioned. I first read the book when I was in 11th Grade, and as a teenager who was largely confused about mostly everything, this book was a sweet refuge. I wouldn’t say that it changed my life or opened my eyes to a new reality because it didn’t. Rather, the story reminds you that despite (going through) all the horrible things in this world, human beings always possess the capacity to not just come out of it but also at times fight it. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is a book that you savour and read on a rainy day.
Cheshta TaterCo-Founder, Rightantra Schools are expected to be safe spaces for children to interact with each other. After several social and legal battles (such as Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, 1954 which prohibited racial segregation in American public schools), schools have emerged as a holistic environment for children to gain education as well as develop the necessary skills. Discrimination, whether intended or not, on any ground not only denies one of opportunities but also gives birth to insecurities and lowers the dignity of a person. It is important to understand that when children or adolescents face discrimination or bullying, their self-confidence is severely affected, leaving them feeling insecure and exposed to further discrimination.
