Due to a host of reasons contributing to the ever-increasing global demographic, today the world is overpopulated with around 7.8 billion inhabitants. Our planet has been experiencing a population explosion since the last fifty years which has resulted in unequal allocation of resources, unstable economic infrastructure, unemployment, poverty, human right violations among other issues. In order to maintain equilibrium and preserve the environment for our future generations, it is necessary to educate people about the ill-effects of overpopulation and introduce effective family planning programs along with other measures so as to control the escalating growth. As of today, there is an urgent need to establish functional and productive population control policies to overcome the lack of resources and maintain a decent standard of living.

Ameesha TripathiEditor In-Chief, Rightantra A recent judgement passed by the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay HC has made headlines and caused an uproar due to its peculiar reasoning. The case involved a young 12-year-old girl, who was lured by a man under the pretence of providing a guava, and then groped her breasts and tried to remove her salwar. When the child resisted the same, he fled, locking her in the room for her mother to find. Upon learning these facts, the mother immediately filed an FIR under sections 354 (outraging the modesty of a woman), 363 (kidnapping) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code (“IPC”) and section 8 (sexual assault) of the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences Act (“POCSO Act”).
Cheshta TaterCo-Founder, Rightantra Fauji Brat is a commonly used term in India (Military Brat in the United States) for children whose parent(s) serve in the armed forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Border Road Organisation, and Military Engineering Services, among others). Growing up, most of us have seen at least one film or a series which revolves around such a Military Brat. Whether it is Farah Khan’s Mai Hoon Na or Aubrey from Pitch Perfect or my latest and cringiest discovery, Ek Duje Ke Vaaste 2. Most of these carry traces, if not are wholly based on, of false stereotypes about the children from the Defence background. To point some of them out, we got in touch with some real-life Fauji Kids.
Tvisha VarmaContributing Author, Rightantra Adolescence and childhood are pivotal stages in the development of a child’s brain. However, these are also very vulnerable stages for children. In fact, nearly 1 in every 5 adolescent experiences damaging mental health issues.
Just as you can avert your child from catching a cold or breaking a bone, you can prevent them from having mental health issues. We are all familiar with the aspects we have to take into consideration to keep a child physically healthy; nourishing food, exercise and immunisations. However, the basics for a good mental health aren’t always as defined. The foremost action to be taken is to understand that a child’s mental health is an extremely important part of their overall well being, and must be provided equal weightage as any physical requirement. Cheshta TaterCo-Founder, Rightantra Tanya GoelCreative Head and Researcher, Rightantra The purpose of censorship and certification of audio-visual entertainment in India is not to restrict freedom of speech but to ensure that children do not get exposed to material which may be psychologically damaging.
The Information and Broadcasting (“I&B”) Ministry’s move to govern the Over-the-Top (“OTT”) Platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus Hotstar, etc. has met with criticism from the champions of freedom of expression. While speculations indicate that the proposed censorship might be a restriction on the creative freedom of filmmakers, Rightantra highlights the importance of the regulation of OTT Platforms and suggests solutions to strike a balance between creative freedom and well-being of the children. |
