Lily PooniaContributing Author, Rightantra Cheshta TaterCo-Founder, Rightantra It is no secret that the Internet has made the world a smaller place, connecting people globally in real-time. The increased accessibility to the internet has benefited us in innumerous ways but has also aggravated and furthered the crime of child pornography. Since 2011, there has been a 774% increase in child pornographic material on the internet. The grave nature of the offence of child pornography calls for a uniform and sound international regime equipped to regulate the internet and identify and prosecute the perpetrators.

Cheshta TaterCo-Founder, Rightantra After having understood that children do not have the capacity to give sexual consent (read our previous article here to know more), it is natural to question why child pornography exists and why people enjoy such a heinous act. This article not only explores that facet but also another important one: our role in the prevention of child pornography. Let’s find out with Rightantra.
Lily PooniaContributing Author, Rightantra The demand and sharing of Child Pornography has increased at an alarming rate with the increased accessibility of the internet. Alarmingly, 35-38% of the total pornographic material uploaded on the web is related to children. In 1998, over 3,000 cases were registered against websites containing child pornography. The number of cases increased to over 100,000 just a decade later, and in the year 2014, the number exceeded 1 million for the first time. Last year, there were 18.4 million reported cases of child pornography across the world. In spite of the widely prevalent consensus against child pornography, the ever-increasing statistics of users are staggering.
Given the unnerving increase, it is extremely crucial that we should be aware of the various legal provisions which strictly prohibit the same. Cheshta TaterCo-Founder, Rightantra One of the most challenging tasks of raising a child is to ensure that conversations about awkward or taboo topics are comfortable and easy, while also serving their purpose of education. Topping the list of such topics, is the birds and the bees talk- conversations surrounding sex, including pornography. Unfortunately, most children do not receive accurate information and exposure from proper channels regarding the same, creating a cycle of misinformation and taboos. Through this series of articles, Rightantra will explain the concept of pornography, while focusing on the illegal act of child pornography.
Khadija HetavkarContributing Author, Rightantra In a recent judgment in the case of Rohit Sharma v. State of Himachal Pradesh, the Himachal Pradesh High Court granted bail to a man accused of raping a minor girl based on the voluntary conduct of the minor girl in accompanying the man for intercourse on an earlier occasion, despite acknowledging her inability to consent to sexual intercourse.
This article has been rather difficult to write. Why should I target the innocent kids who are trying to make their mark in the artistic space? Doesn’t the media do enough of that already? Let’s have a look at the top pop-music artists today: Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Billie Ellish, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, and Harry Styles, among others, have all started their careers in the music industry as child artists. Every detail about them growing up has made it to tabloids or social media––romantic relationships, drug abuse, raging reactions, law suits, and more. Most of them, at one point or another, have been antagonized by the paparazzi who follow them everywhere they go. They might be breaking records today but all of this has only happened after surviving a gushing wave of hate. On that note, here’s my unpopular opinion for the issue: Child Artists like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus were justified in their reactions and behaviour.
BOOK REVIEW: ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE BY BENJAMIN ALIRE SÁENZ11/10/2020 Drasti JainDrasti Jain is a third year law student at Government Law College, Mumbai. I primarily decided to read this book because of its pretty cover (yes, I judged it by the cover) and because the characters involved the names Aristotle and Dante. While my expectations for the book were vastly different, nevertheless it did not disappoint but rather went over and above what I had envisioned. I first read the book when I was in 11th Grade, and as a teenager who was largely confused about mostly everything, this book was a sweet refuge. I wouldn’t say that it changed my life or opened my eyes to a new reality because it didn’t. Rather, the story reminds you that despite (going through) all the horrible things in this world, human beings always possess the capacity to not just come out of it but also at times fight it. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is a book that you savour and read on a rainy day.
Khadija HetavkarContributing Author, Rightantra Raising a child can be an overwhelming and challenging experience for parents. Children are impulsive, defiant, self-indulging, and in need of proper guidance. To regulate a child’s behaviour, a variety of disciplinary strategies have been implemented by parents over the years. These disciplinary strategies include time-outs, a temporary withdrawal of privileges, positive reinforcement, verbal reprimands, and physical punishment.
Subsequent to the appeal arising out of the Division Bench hearing of the Bombay High Court case of Pintu Sonale v. State of Maharashtra, the Full Bench of the same decided that convicts under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (‘POCSO’) will not be granted parole under the the Maharashtra Prisons (Mumbai Furlough and Parole (Amendment) Rules, 2020 (‘Parole Rules, 2020’). Under these rules, convicts can be granted an emergency parole (due to the COVID-19 outbreak) in pursuance of the Epidemics Diseases Act, 1897.
Lily PooniaContributing Author, Rightantra Pursuant to the current worldwide situation, a peculiar but pertinent question has arisen in the Bombay High Court: whether a POCSO Convict would be granted parole under the Parole Rules 2020?
Cheshta TaterCo-Founder, Rightantra Schools are expected to be safe spaces for children to interact with each other. After several social and legal battles (such as Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, 1954 which prohibited racial segregation in American public schools), schools have emerged as a holistic environment for children to gain education as well as develop the necessary skills. Discrimination, whether intended or not, on any ground not only denies one of opportunities but also gives birth to insecurities and lowers the dignity of a person. It is important to understand that when children or adolescents face discrimination or bullying, their self-confidence is severely affected, leaving them feeling insecure and exposed to further discrimination.
