The increased accessibility to the internet has benefited us in innumerous ways but has also aggravated and furthered the crime of child pornography. Since 2011, there has been a 774% increase in child pornographic material on the internet. The grave nature of the offence of child pornography calls for a uniform and sound international regime equipped to regulate the internet and identify and prosecute the perpetrators. There are presently four widely accepted international instruments which concern themselves with the crime of child pornography. These include:
A study of child pornography laws in 184 Interpol member countries around the world has produced alarming results: more than half of these countries (95) have no laws addressing child pornography and in many other countries, the existing laws are inadequate. The study brings out the inefficiency and inadequacy of the laws against child pornography all around the world. The research also highlights the dire need of the countries to bring about urgent legal reforms to win this battle against child sexual abuse. The solution for child pornography involves us all, as is indicated in our previous article. The international and national governmental authorities need to take active legislative steps to ensure that child pornography is not only punished but also successfully deterred. The internet fosters novel and complex challenges to existing regulatory regimes and structures. The effective implementation, enforcement, and harmonization of laws will reduce the availability and dissemination of child pornography on the Internet substantially and bring us a step closer to making the world and the Internet an abuse-free space for children.
