Cheshta TaterCo-Founder, Rightantra After having understood that children do not have the capacity to give sexual consent (read our previous article here to know more), it is natural to question why child pornography exists and why people enjoy such a heinous act. This article not only explores that facet but also another important one: our role in the prevention of child pornography. Let’s find out with Rightantra. In this moment, while you read this article, there are approximately 2.5 million files of child pornography being viewed around the world. A large portion of those are viewed by people who have never seen such content before. None of these people would willingly admit to having seen such material. However, the reason behind concealing this information is not entirely due to the criminal nature of such an activity. They hide it because it is a social wrong. A taboo. This is also why they will probably come back to it. There is something so taboo and so charged about it that they find themselves returning for the "high" even when the thought of children being sexually abused makes their skin crawl and they feel sickened by it when they think about what they are looking at. Unfortunately, removing the taboo from it is only a solution to increase the number of cases being reported and to facilitate the child to open up about abuse. It does not stop paedophilia. According to Dr. Pat Shipman, an anthropologist, no species of animals except humans show signs of paedophilia or having sexual intercourse with unwilling partners. She says, “[A human paedophile] doesn't pick up or react appropriately to the social and cultural signals that should prevent him from having sex with unwilling partners, including children.” However, she also admits that the root causes of paedophilia remain unknown. A possible cause is that the paedophiles discover, usually as teenagers, that their sexual preferences have not matured like everyone else’s. Most get stuck on the same-age boys or girls who first attracted them at the start of puberty, though some retain interest in far younger children. This reasoning has created an uproar among psychologists, activists and law enforcement officials since it gives the perception that paedophilia is justified and is beyond one’s control. While this debate continues, it is extremely important for the persons surrounding the child to take measures to ensure that they do not become the subjects of pornographic material. Four categories of persons who come in contact with a child must create a check-and-balance system to safeguard the child. Their responsibilities are showcased by this chart: * To learn how to identify signs of child sexual abuse, you can refer to our article on the same here.
