Anushka Mehta Co-Founder, Rightantra The National Education Policy, 2020 was a much hailed reform, being the first education policy for Indian students in the 21st century. It brought forward many needed improvements, the most important being the introduction of the “5+3+3+4” design corresponding to the age groups 3-8 years (foundational stage), 8-11 (preparatory), 11-14 (middle), and 14-18 (secondary), which brings pre-schooling into the fold of formal education by replacing “10+2”. Another integral aspect of the NEP was the boost to vocational education, which has been elucidated upon in Rightantra’s previous articles here and here.
Now it has been a year since the initiation of the NEP, and the Ministry of Education has come out with new initiatives to realise the objectives of the NEP and bring Indian education at par with global standards.

Tvisha VarmaContributing Author, Rightantra The moment you have your phone in your hand, you keep going back to Instagram and admire (maybe even feel a little jealous) of some living “living the life”.
If this describes you, read this article. Nisha PurohitContributing Author, Rightantra A crucial question of law emerges concerning the definition of “Rape” as contained under Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (“IPC”), as evidenced by the Criminal Law Amendment Act, 2013 (“Act of 2013”), that whether the term “Rape” as defined in the amended section 375 includes sexual assaults beyond penile penetration into vagina, urethra, anus, and mouth; the known orifices in the human body to which such penetration as imaginably possible.
Cheshta TaterCo-founder, Rightantra While I sat eating at a rather expensive restaurant today, I spotted a child from the huge French window. He was doing pull-ups. On the scaffolding. No, he was not a child labourer. But in that moment, I couldn’t help but be selfish.
Cheshta TaterCo-founder, Rightantra Being a high school-CBSE student in Mumbai is not easy. Getting a good and affordable tutor is just impossible. I believe finding a good tutor is an issue for many, regardless of the educational board that prescribes their syllabus. At one point, life revolves around tuition timings and homework. Indian entrepreneurs observed this and created a multi-billion marketplace we didn’t even realise we needed.
Righting the failings of illegitimacy: Santhosha v. Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited7/19/2021 Anushka Mehta Co-Founder, Rightantra “With changing social norms of legitimacy in every society, including ours, what was illegitimate in the past may be legitimate today. The concept of legitimacy stems from social consensus, in the shaping of which various social groups play a vital role.”
For eons, illegitimate children have been treated unequally when it comes to succession and maintenance, depending on various personal laws governing them. This is especially so in cases when children are born out of wedlock. However, with regard to compassionate employment on the death of the parent, the Karnataka High Court recently upheld that no differentiation must be made between legitimate and illegitimate children. Isha ShethContributing Author at Rightantra Are you hungry? No problem. Head to the nearest refrigerator and grab your favourite meal. However, this solution is not available to you, if you're part of the 800 million people who had the misfortune of being part of the wrong social class.
Alifiya Manasawala Contributing Author, Rightantra Nisha Purohit Contributing Author, Rightantra You hear Mr. Kumar’s son has started his career as a dance teacher. Your reaction? “Well maybe he was unable to succeed academically”. It has become ingrained as a stereotype in society to view vocational activities as secondary to more conventional forms of careers. The NEP 2020 is here to change that very thought process and remove the stigma attached to vocational education. Sounds fancy, doesn’t it? But is it actually as good as it sounds? The regular changes in the schooling and evaluating system frustrates both parents as well as the students. With newer policies and newer acronyms, the confusion was perpetual. The New Education Policy 2020 (“NEP”) aims to bring an end to this constant state of flux. In a similar fashion, we aim to provide clarity regarding this newest addition to the education system with emphasis on vocational education, to help all the frustrated and confused parents and students understand what the NEP holds for them—the good, the bad, and the ugly. Cheshta TaterCo-Founder, Rightantra Maybe it is the area of study I am in or maybe it is my generation, that we talk about sex quite openly and plainly. Sex and sexuality are as old as mankind but I’m sure eyebrows will be raised for opening an article on a child rights platform with this subject. While most readers would choose to read further to see what I have to say, some people will only continue reading it in the hope of some “spicy” content. Some will read further so they can criticise. At the end of the day, sex sells.
Isha Sheth Contributing Author, Rightantra The second and the deadlier wave of COVID-19 has been plaguing the country since April this year. While this wave was marred by shortages of medicines, oxygen and hospital beds, social media applications such as Twitter, Whatsapp and Instagram have come to the rescue of people. Posts have been put up and come to the aid of netizens for various purposes be it supplying an oxygen cylinder or arranging ventilators! However, the ones who have especially suffered an immeasurable loss, are the children who have been left orphaned during this wave of the pandemic.
Cheshta TaterCo-Founder, Rightantra Ever since the birth of the Internet, the Government and social activists have been engaged in an ardent attempt to end the production and dissemination of pornography on it, more particularly child pornography. Such attempts are enshrined in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (“POCSO”) and the Information Technology Act, 2000 (“IT Act”). The Madras High Court recently granted anticipatory bail to a man accused of viewing child pornography. Read more about this case here.
Veehangi SinghGuest Author My mornings don’t start before 9 AM unless they absolutely need to. One of the many reasons why I prefer to sleep in later than most people is because of how long my days feel if I don’t. I have been on the road for 4 hours now, and it feels like half the day’s already passed us by.
‘The Body Keeps the Score’ by Bessel Van Der Kolk is my most recent read and an essential on a 10-hour-long ride into the hills. I read two paragraphs out of his chapter on ‘Developmental Trauma: The Hidden Epidemic’, before forcing myself to stop, in an urge to prevent the motion sickness of the bumpy ride from reaching my throat. As I look out the window, in a mere attempt to distract myself from nausea, my mind goes back to this one line in the book: ‘Most of the public only knows them as statistics’. They are hundreds and thousands in number, absorb enormous resources , often without much benefit. Who is Prof Van Der Kolk talking about? Who is someone who takes up an array of professionals to keep themselves fully functioning? Anushka MehtaCo-Founder, Rightantra Cheshta TaterCo-Founder, Rightantra Well, there is absolutely no doubt that anyone would double-tap seeing a cute baby doing cute-baby-things. But do you know that a lot of children have presence on the internet even before they are born?! Yes, it happens (ultrasound images). But what's the problem in it? Read more to know.
