Anushka MehtaCo-Founder, Rightantra According to the 2011 Census, India’s population of 121.09 crore then, included 16.45 crore children aged between 0-6 years. Keeping in mind the large percentage of children forming a part of the total population, a number which has only grown in the last 10 years, it is so surprising that every 1 in 4 children of school going age has either dropped out of or is not enrolled in the formal schooling system. This showcases the lack of awareness and the carelessness of policymakers and parents alike. The importance that pre-primary and primary education has in the life a child cannot be stressed enough. Upto 85% of the development of the human brain occurs by the age of 6 years, placing emphasis on the need for the correct type of education to be provided from a young age for the proper and all-round growth of a child. This correct medium of education includes but is not limited to alphabets, numbers, languages, logical thinking, arts and crafts, music, etc. It is essential that every child acquires the ability to read, write and do arithmetic (3 R’s) in order to build a foundation for higher learning.
It is most important to remember that the end goal of providing education is to ensure that the receiver attains knowledge and learns skills such as critical thinking, creativity, moral understanding, etc. to ensure a holistic, overall development. That being said, the only method to achieve this goal is not through the formal pre-primary and primary education system, i.e., by enrolling into pre-school or class 1 and 2, which cater to the educational needs of toddlers and young children. Reasons for inability to send one’s children or for a child to be unable to attend classes in a school could be many such as financial difficulties, requirement of a flexible time or additional attention to particular subject, however, all of these considerations can be overcome since every child deserves complete fulfilment of their right to education.
